Don’t end up looking like you have four boobs

Don't end up looking like you have four boobs

Earlier in the week, a Which? report revealed that bra fitting services in the UK were inadequate - and we all know what poorly fitting underwear can do to an outfit.

So in order to avoid unsightly lumps and bumps how can we ensure that we are choosing the right size when we shop for undergarments?

We spoke to the programme leader for contour fashion at De Montfort University Gillian Proctor, who gave some great advice to ensure that we are properly supported!

"You should be measured consistently - your size can change within weeks," she said.

"If you want to change the effect you want your bra to create, then in terms of styling your cup size may vary between two or three cup sizes [during the month]," she added.

Gillian explained that your bra does not fit properly if your straps constantly fall down, the back of the bra sits too highly on your back and if the centre of the bra does not sit against your skin.

You don’t want to look like you have four boobs instead of two underneath your top, she continued!

Which? found that of the high street stores that offered a bra fitting service, less than one in three were adequate enough to recommend. It stressed that if your underwear does not fit properly, it can make neck, back and shoulder problems worse.

Have you been disappointed by bra-fitting services?

Dresscode imposed in Tesco store

Dresscode imposed in Tesco store

Would you wear your pyjamas outside of the house? I don’t know about you but I always like to make an effort with my clothing and make sure that I look presentable. Of course I like to put on comfy clothes when I am watching television in the evening or if I’m heading out for a run - but I’m definitely a designer shoe and not a trainers girl.

This is why it surprised me to read that one Tesco supermarket has had to impose a formal dress code to stop people from doing their weekly food shop without any shoes on or from going in with their pyjamas on! Who does that?

"To avoid causing embarrassment to others we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted)," said the official sign outside the store.

According to news reports this move was caused by women popping into the supermarket in their sleepwear after dropping their children off at school in the morning.

I wouldn’t put the bins out in my pyjamas! I would be worried to get in my car not properly dressed in case something happened and I had to get out!

Have you ever gone out in public with your bedtime clothing on?

Britons ‘cutting back on clothing?’

Britons 'cutting back on clothing?'

Designer clothing is something that I’ve never really been able to cut back on. It is my biggest luxury spend and I believe in investing in quality pieces.

Recent research carried out by the Co-operative Bank found that 75 per cent of women in the UK were planning on being careful with their spending in 2010 - and making fewer impulse purchases.

Some 60 per cent of females said that they would be cutting back on what they spend on clothing and 41 per cent would watch what they were splashing out on accessories such as necklaces and bracelets.

And although 29 per cent said that handbags and shoes would be an area where they could save money, five per cent cited bags as an item that they would "splurge" on.

However, its good news in some cases as: "The figures also highlight that more than half of women (59 per cent) confess to buying more classic fashion pieces now, thinking about the good old theory where a cheaper item of clothing can actually be more expensive in the long run than a classic garment," revealed the study.

Recently, it was revealed that Kate Moss will be teaming up with Longchamp to create a new line of designer handbags - definitely something to splurge on!

What are your must-have luxury purchases?

Americans ‘dress better for their age’

Americans 'dress better for their age'

Who do you think dresses well for their age? When it comes to women over 30, who stands out as having got their style and clothing choices just right?

Can you think of any British celebrities who dress well? According to Lizanne Harris at Stylist magazine, English women can’t seem to get it right and go too far one way or the other.

"I do think Americans do it better, like Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie," she said.

Looking at the photographs from the National Television Awards earlier this week (January 20th) I can see her point in some cases.

Of course she is much older than 30, but Sherrie Hewson bared far more than was necessary in her see-through top.

And Louise Redknap looked more like a nun than her former yummy mummy self!

Lizanne told us that: "Simple sophistication is very American and it is one of the trends for spring/summer - that American preppy sports feel."

"It is very wearable," she added.

But what exactly should women of a certain age be avoiding? Hilary Alexander from the Telegraph gave a succinct list.

Short skirts, outerwear that looks like undergarments, knitwear in a cobweb style and American sports trends should be avoided "like the plague", she advised.

Who is your over-30s inspiration???

Shop clever and feel better in your clothing

Shop clever and feel better in your clothing

It’s coming to that time in January when people’s new year resolutions might have fallen by the wayside and fad diets may have come to an end. But when it comes to clothing, what good habits did people intend on making?

Modelling agency Models Direct has given some advice about how to keep your wardrobe updated with the year’s latest trends as well as some tips about how to shop well.

The company suggests that when choosing clothing its important that you buy the right size. I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of buying an item that is slightly too small in the hope that we will somehow slim into it.

"You’ll look infinitely better if you wear clothes that fit you properly," it stressed.

"If you’re concerned about people knowing what size you are then Models Direct suggest simply cutting out the label," the agency added.

Another tip for feeling better about yourself - and confidence is attractive - is to choose clothing that you know you will feel comfortable in. There’s nothing worse than feeling self-conscious about something that you’re wearing.

Models Direct also advised having a clear out. You will find tops, jeans and dresses that you had forgotten that you owned and you will realise what items you need and don’t need. This will help you to avoid making frivolous purchases!

According to Mintel, the average amount women spent on tops and blouses for work increased by five per cent in the two years to 2008 to £60 per item.
