Get married in a Hepburn dress
November 26th, 2009
When it comes to designer dresses, there are perhaps few that are as hard to get your hands on as one previously owned by as big a fashion icon as Audrey Hepburn.
Next week, (December 7th and 8th), several of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star’s most famous frocks will be going up for auction in aid of charity. Now this is one designer clothing sale we would love to be attending!
Among the 30-or-so items to go under the gavel at La Galleria in London is her unworn wedding dress - as she called off her marriage to James Hanson.
The story behind the gown is a touching one, as Hepburn had ordered it to be given to someone who would never be able to afford such a dress.
She added that the dress be given to "the most beautiful, poor Italian girl you can find." And Amabile Altobella was the lucky recipient, who wore the Fontana dress to her wedding.
It is thought by some experts that the event could raise more than £100,000, according to Vogue, and half of the money will be donated to Unicef and The Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund.
When her Breakfast at Tiffany’s Givenchy designer dress featured in an auction in 2006, it sold for an astounding £467,200.
