Power dressing makes a comeback

Power dressing makes a comeback

I for one am a huge fan of power dressing - there’s nothing quite like a chic and smart clothing ensemble to make you feel as though you could rule the world.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if my fabulous little Dolce and Gabbana suit was singlehandedly responsible for getting me every girl’s dream job here at Secret Sales HQ.

That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that if we are following the designer clothing cues at Milan Fashion Week, it looks as though power dressing is set to stage something of a comeback.

Both Versace and Jil Sander’s autumn/winter 2010 collections didn’t have an ounce of pretty pastel or floral print in sight and instead showcased a line-up of structured, seamless, sophisticated designs.

Iconic clothing designer Donatella Versace sent models down the catwalk sporting an athletic up-to-the minute take on traditional Italian tailoring, with buttons and wraps making way for elastic and zips.

Meanwhile, Jil Sander designer Raf Simons proved that there is a suit for pretty much every woman by pairing skirts, shorts and even all-in-ones with tailored blazers in an array of patterns.

Yesterday, we reported that Dolce and Gabbana had celebrated 25 years at the top of the fashion industry by reverting to their roots with a collection of chic, tailored pieces that were paired with this season’s lace and black satin.

Could Milan Fashion Week mark a return to the world of power dressing for us fashionistas?

All hail the new clothing range from Versace!

All hail the new clothing range from Versace!

Now, I know that I can get excitable about fashion happenings from time to time but a recent announcement in the clothing world has got me practically jumping around the Secret Sales office with joy.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that designer clothing could become that little bit more affordable for all us babes on a budget thanks to a new collection from Versace.

Due to that pesky recession that we hear mentioned every five minutes, the designer clothing brand is set to release a new lower-priced range in the hope of encouraging profits in the company.

As the brainchild of chief executive Gian Giacomo Ferraris, the Versace Collection range will be an impressive 30 to 40 per cent cheaper than the main line.

But in slightly gloomier news for Versace employees, the company has also announced that it is set to lose approximately 350 staff worldwide in a bid to cut costs.

I will most certainly be hot-footing it out of the office as soon as the collection hits stores in the hope of securing a fabulous bargain.

Versace got a welcome celebrity endorsement at last weekend’s Grammy awards when Jennifer Lopez showcased the brand’s mini-dress gown hybrid from the spring 2010 collection.

Will you be rushing out to buy Versace Collection?

Georgia Jagger in Versace

Georgia Jagger in Versace

After being named model of the year at the British Fashion Awards in December a lot will be expected of Miss Georgia May Jagger in 2010. So how has she kicked off the year under her new title?

This week (January 12th) the youngest offspring of model Jerry Hall and musician Mick Jagger has been named as the next face of the designer clothing label Versace for its latest spring/summer collection’s advertising campaign.

Photographed by none other than Mario Testino in November of last year, the images show the blonde, leggy model in brightly-coloured neon dresses and tightly fitted suits, clutching a Versace designer handbag and wearing matching heels.

Laid out on a white fur blanket next to ornate furniture, the photographs are certainly colourful.

"She’s smart, a strong personality, beautiful, full of energy … and with that natural high star quality, I adore her! She’s perfect for this collection - a real Versace girl," said Donatella Versace on the choice of model.

The campaign can be viewed online and will start to appear in the glossies from next month.

Expect to also see the bee-stung lipped starlet appear in the next campaign from Rimmel London this year.

Is she earning her fashion crown?

Versace appoints new finance officer

Versace appoints new finance officer

There have been some major changes going on over at the Versace fashion house this season as the company tries to turn itself around. The new chief financial officer has been appointed and he’s a former industry figure.

Additionally, the Italian designer clothing label is increasing its board of directors in a bid to get its finances back on track.

Forming part of the restructuring is the appointment of Francesco Buccola, ex-Gucci finance director, as the replacement for Massimo Sala.

The board of directors at Versace has also been expanded to eight members and sees former executive at the Gucci Group and Abercrombie & Fitch and ex-chief executive of Barilla Holding Robert Singer join the table.

According to Reuters, Donatella Versace, daughter Allegra and brother Santo - owners of the brand - are hoping to return the company to a profit-making position in 2011.

This year, a pre-tax loss of €30 million (£26.8 million) is expected to be posted, up from €400,000 in 2008.

Founded by Gianni Versace in the ’70s, his sister took over the running of the company after he was shot outside his home in 1997.

Previous faces of the label have included Madonna, Gisele Bundchen, Kate Moss and Halle Berry.

Vogue: Why go trad when you can dazzle in rad?

Why go trad when you can dazzle in rad?

Christmas party fashion and evening wear is all about dresses, showing some leg and shoulder pads.

This is the view of Emma Elwick over at British Vogue, whose festive fashion motto is: "Why go trad when you can dazzle in rad?"

She looked to the catwalk and designer clothing for her inspiration and noted the large pearls, ribbons, bows and puffed-out skirts in the Marc Jacobs collection for Louis Vuitton.

Jumpsuits, lace and bows made an appearance on Stella McCartney’s runway and other designers have showcased minidresses and crystal-embellished glamour.

However, it was Versace that got her vote on the designer dresses front for the most "irresistibly sexy" party pieces.

"It’s ’80s opulence but be sure to wear with messy dressy hair and confident insouciance," she adds, to rise above the doom and gloom of the recession with a smile on your face.

Over at the Sun, Laura Naylor explained that we are going to see a lot of metallic makeup this Christmas and Burberry, Mac and Gucci opted for gold at the fashion shows this season.

She recommended white gold with plenty of black mascara and dark eyes, adding dark skin tones often suit more coppery colours.

Please let us know at Secret Sales HQ what you plan on wearing to your office party this year.
