Power dressing makes a comeback

Power dressing makes a comeback

I for one am a huge fan of power dressing - there’s nothing quite like a chic and smart clothing ensemble to make you feel as though you could rule the world.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if my fabulous little Dolce and Gabbana suit was singlehandedly responsible for getting me every girl’s dream job here at Secret Sales HQ.

That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that if we are following the designer clothing cues at Milan Fashion Week, it looks as though power dressing is set to stage something of a comeback.

Both Versace and Jil Sander’s autumn/winter 2010 collections didn’t have an ounce of pretty pastel or floral print in sight and instead showcased a line-up of structured, seamless, sophisticated designs.

Iconic clothing designer Donatella Versace sent models down the catwalk sporting an athletic up-to-the minute take on traditional Italian tailoring, with buttons and wraps making way for elastic and zips.

Meanwhile, Jil Sander designer Raf Simons proved that there is a suit for pretty much every woman by pairing skirts, shorts and even all-in-ones with tailored blazers in an array of patterns.

Yesterday, we reported that Dolce and Gabbana had celebrated 25 years at the top of the fashion industry by reverting to their roots with a collection of chic, tailored pieces that were paired with this season’s lace and black satin.

Could Milan Fashion Week mark a return to the world of power dressing for us fashionistas?

Dolce and Gabbana celebrate 25 years at the top

Iconic Italian clothing designers Dolce and Gabbana are celebrating 25 years at the top of the fashion industry in the utmost style by doing what they do best at Milan Fashion Week.

The brand truly proved the "if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it" mantra is true by sticking to what they know and fashionistas the world over love.

Going back to their roots, the designers showed that their 25-year history in the business has made them the creators of signature pieces that are the absolute epitome of chic.

Classic black tailored blazers were paired with lace and black satin waist-minimising corsets in order to subtly combine this season’s romantic trends with what the Italian clothing designers are famed for.

Leopard print and polka dots also appeared in the collection but in a sophisticated, grown-up manner, with more corsetry and figure-hugging high-waist pencil skirts creating stunning feminine silhouettes.

In my opinion, it’s nice to see Dolce and Gabbana’s classic-with-a-modern-twist collection successfully bringing Milan Fashion Week back into the headlines for all the right reasons.

The past few days of coverage have been marred by various show organisers voicing their discontent over the fact that Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour could only dedicate three of her busy days to the fashion event.

Is Dolce and Gabbana a label that you can always rely on?

The return of conical bras

The return of conical bras

Screen sirens Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell wore them back in the 1950s, and Madonna revived the look during her Blonde Ambition tour in the 1990s, now conical bras have made yet another return to fashion and are being embraced by stylistas in their hordes.

Love them or loathe them, John Lewis has recorded a surge in sales of the quirky underwear garments that work to make women’s boobs look pointier than bullets.

Clearly the spring-summer 2010 lines of designers like Dolce and Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier have had a significant effect on the masses, considering they worked the look into their aesthetic in the form of underwear as outwear.

It’s simply the way fashion is going at the minute - take Lady Gaga and Katy Perry for example. They revived granny pants by bejewelling and pairing them with sexy hosiery and heels, turning them into a must-have fashion essential.

But head buyer of lingerie at John Lewis Helen Spencer has another theory for the return of conical bras, saying: "Throughout the last century, the trend for feminine pointy-shaped bras experienced a renaissance following times of a toughened economy, marking a return of unabashed femininity as women seek to have more fun with fashion as a form of escapism."

Whether that really is the case in fashion at the moment is neither here nor there for me. I’m interested in the trend and how it will best suit my favourite designer clothes, but part of me wonders if the look is just too overtly sexual for anywhere outside the bedroom.

What do you think?

Alexa Chung’s impressive fashion credentials

Alexa Chung's impressive fashion credentials

Model-turned-TV presenter Alexa Chung has proved that she really has what it takes to deserve the title of fashion icon in the making.

The British-born star, who has recently moved to America where she is already making waves in TV and fashion, is set to appear in a fashion spread in this month’s edition of V magazine.

We here at Secret Sales HQ got a sneak preview at some of the shots and I have got to admit, they are corkers!

She looks absolutely stunning in an array of different designer clothing ensembles, including that sexy black Stella McCartney lacy jumpsuit with wide black ribbon around the waist.

The 25-year-old also wore some designs by Dolce and Gabbana and Chanel - all of which she looked drop dead gorgeous in.

So, considering she is such a pro when it comes to wearing high-end clothes, it should come as no surprise to most that she has been snapped up by none other than DKNY for this season’s jeans campaign. I can’t wait to see her on billboards all over the place!

However, being the cool and intelligent girl she is Alexa hasn’t let the glamorous world of fashion manipulate her, as she is still super-savvy to the fickle way it can be. For example, she told the magazine: "I just don’t tolerate douche bags. You get them in England too, those people who just sort of hang out and hold coats or something.

"But there are more of them here. It’s like they make jobs as friends, like your best friend is your stylist now."

Do you think Alexa could one day be considered as a fashion icon?

Madonna cast in Dolce and Gabbana’s menswear campaign?

Madonna cast in Dolce and Gabbana's menswear campaign?

When news broke last week that Queen of Pop Madonna is set to star in the new Dolce and Gabbana ad campaign, I couldn’t help but think how refreshing it is that a 51-year-old female celebrity is still considered relevant in an industry that is so focused on youth and beauty … not that Madonna isn’t beautiful of course. Mere mortals can only dream of being in such good shape as she at that age.

But, when fashion magazine Grazia reported that it is the forthcoming menswear collection that the Material Girl is set to model, I could not believe my eyes.

Granted, Madonna pulls off the androgynous look very well indeed. Very few women have the confidence and strength inside them to evoke such power in their exterior and Madonna is one of them. But how bizarre for her to be chosen as the individual hired to make men around the world want to buy Dolce and Gabbana’s designer clothing?

The magazine suggested that it could be that the mum-of-four has been cast to pose as mere arm candy for the campaign’s leading male, which it believes could be her beau Jesus Luz. But since when did Madonna take a backseat to any man?

While the prospect of one of the world’s greatest female artists taking to the role of a man for the purpose of fashion sounds scrumptiously quirky to us here at Secret Sales HQ, whether it will appeal to the designer clothes label’s target audience remains to be seen.

Do you think Madonna would make a good menswear model?
