Put your handbag on a diet

Put your handbag on a diet

I absolutely love designer handbags. They are my biggest luxury purchase and the larger the better! However, my new Mulberry tote bag is huge and because I can fit so much stuff in it I tend to carry around more than is necessary!

But I do know that this is something I need to pay more attention to. Once on a shopping trip in Edinburgh my handbag became so heavy it gave me a trapped nerve in my neck!

So, how can we make sure we can still wear our huge designer bags with pride, without ending up on the physio table?

A spokesperson from the British Chiropractic Association advised women to "only carry the essentials with you" and to keep your handbag "as light as possible".

"I would say that a handbag that you can carry evenly over both shoulders is better," he added.

Or "a bag that you can carry across your body", as it is best to keep its weight as close as possible to your body’s centre of gravity.

Debenhams recently revealed that handbags typically weigh 57 per cent less than they did two years ago - and the store puts this down to gadgets getting smaller and weighing less.

On average, a woman’s bag now weighs around 1.5 kg.

Are you guilty of carrying too much in your handbag?

Milla Jovovich to design Tommy Hilfiger bag

Milla Jovovich to design Tommy Hilfiger bag

Fifth Element actress and former model Milla Jovovich’s last designer clothing endeavour alongside fellow model Carmen Hawk may have fizzled out before it made much of an impact on the world’s major runways, but that doesn’t mean that the Ukrainian-born star hasn’t got what it takes as a worthy designer. Just ask legendary US designer Tommy Hilfiger.

Apparently the New York-based design icon has enlisted Milla to craft next season’s Tommy Hilfiger Breast Health International bag and according to WWD, the 33-year-old was only too happy to oblige.

The bag in question will not be launched until April next year, but if it’s anything like the 2009 initiative backed by supermodel Helena Christensen, I would wager it is set to be impressive.

For those of you who don’t know, sexy Victoria’s Secret star Helena, 40, was the designer behind that fabulous oversized Mimosa soft leather yellow tote that was launched in Tommy Hilfiger stores back in March.

Commenting on the cause at the time, she said: "Breast cancer affects women of all ages worldwide and I commend Breast Health International and Tommy Hilfiger for stepping up to the mark to find a cure for this disease.

"I am honoured to be chosen as an ambassador of such a worthy cause and initiative."

Her designer handbag was a major success, so here’s hoping Milla follows in her lucky footsteps!

Do you think being a model qualifies someone to design clothes?

New Furla handbag line to rival the classics

Whether your own personal designer handbag brand of choice is Dior, Chanel, Mulberry or Fendi, no one can deny that accessories label Furla has been doing pretty well over recent years to build up quite a firm following - and at half the price of the favourites.

While granted, nothing could ever beat the fabulous luxe designs that we have come to associate with the aforementioned labels, Furla has managed to produce something completely unique and innovative within the high-end spectrum.

Taking a step away from the usual (and much-loved) heavy leather used in winter collection handbags, the label has gone all hi-tech and produced a range that is both stylish and sensibly practical.

The limited edition Down bag is set to be launched next week and is reportedly perfect for us UK fashionistas. The aesthetics are bang-on-trend, combining a sporty yet futuristic material with a slouchy and oversized shape.

And I’m not the only the one who thinks the bag is fabulous. Marie Claire has described it as "plumpy perfection", adding: "Made of waterproof micro polyester, [it’s] so light you’ll hardly realise you’re carrying [it] - makes a change from the tonne of leather we’re normally toting around."

Apparently the line has been priced to range from £75 to £110, but keep an eye out for future offers here at Secret Sales if you want to save a penny or two!

Which is your favourite designer handbag label?

New Mulberry shoe collection sounds fab

Some dedicated followers of fashion would describe themselves as accessories girls who love nothing more than to get their hands on the latest must-have designer handbag or jewellery collection, but I personally - and I’m sure I’m not alone when I say this - have got to be a shoe gal.

My tastes aren’t confined to one style necessarily. I love my shoes with skyscraper heels, clunky wedges, cute kitten spikes and even flatter than flat soles. And don’t get me started on labels - I’ll wear any pair of shoes provided the sheer sight of them gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside.

So, you can only imagine how excited I am about the brand new line of Mulberry shoes set to be soon unleashed into the world. A friend of mine who works at Grazia has already had a sneak peek and she tells me it’s looking fabulous. She even got to sit down with Mulberry creative director Emma Hill as she talked her through the individual designs - and yes, I am disgustingly green with envy.

Apparently there’s a gorgeous pair of red patent court shoes among the range (which I’ve already visualised a hundred times in my mind) as well as some divine shearling-lined boots, which Emma has reportedly named Ena after her goddaughter.

The designer is planning to unveil her next spring line this September in Claridges, so I shall keep you posted with how that goes. Until then, tell me about your favourite designer shoe labels and which styles you love and why!

Gossip Girl outfit taster!

I am aware that it’s only been a couple of weeks since I last gushed about Gossip Girl - but I just can’t help it, the designer clothing is just too damn fabulous.

Filming for the hotly-anticipated third season hasn’t even wrapped yet let alone aired on TV and I already have a list of my favourite Blair and Serena outfits of the series so far. But with a show that is so heavily influenced by the fashion world and the styles prevalent in New York in particular, how can anyone resist keeping up-to-date with what’s going on at the set?

The latest images to have surfaced of filming are of Blake Lively, aka Serena van der Woodsen. She is pictured dashing across an upper east-side street doing what she does best - parading with her pins on show!

Not content with putting us mere mortals to shame with those never-ending legs, the Manhattan fashionista was sporting a to-die-for cobalt blue shift dress with a patterned-plunging neckline. If you didn’t already know that this shade is set to be huge next season, then you heard it here first ladies.

The blonde bombshell also donned a skimpy cream waistcoat to add a touch of texture to the ensemble - remember, autumn is all about layering! The entire look was pulled together with a divine designer handbag in the very on-trend hue of coral - and not forgetting her silver peep-toe platform heels. Keep an eye out for those when the show finally airs next season.

Who is your favourite Gossip Girl fashionista - Serena or Blair?
