Don’t end up looking like you have four boobs

Don't end up looking like you have four boobs

Earlier in the week, a Which? report revealed that bra fitting services in the UK were inadequate - and we all know what poorly fitting underwear can do to an outfit.

So in order to avoid unsightly lumps and bumps how can we ensure that we are choosing the right size when we shop for undergarments?

We spoke to the programme leader for contour fashion at De Montfort University Gillian Proctor, who gave some great advice to ensure that we are properly supported!

"You should be measured consistently - your size can change within weeks," she said.

"If you want to change the effect you want your bra to create, then in terms of styling your cup size may vary between two or three cup sizes [during the month]," she added.

Gillian explained that your bra does not fit properly if your straps constantly fall down, the back of the bra sits too highly on your back and if the centre of the bra does not sit against your skin.

You don’t want to look like you have four boobs instead of two underneath your top, she continued!

Which? found that of the high street stores that offered a bra fitting service, less than one in three were adequate enough to recommend. It stressed that if your underwear does not fit properly, it can make neck, back and shoulder problems worse.

Have you been disappointed by bra-fitting services?

The return of conical bras

The return of conical bras

Screen sirens Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell wore them back in the 1950s, and Madonna revived the look during her Blonde Ambition tour in the 1990s, now conical bras have made yet another return to fashion and are being embraced by stylistas in their hordes.

Love them or loathe them, John Lewis has recorded a surge in sales of the quirky underwear garments that work to make women’s boobs look pointier than bullets.

Clearly the spring-summer 2010 lines of designers like Dolce and Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier have had a significant effect on the masses, considering they worked the look into their aesthetic in the form of underwear as outwear.

It’s simply the way fashion is going at the minute - take Lady Gaga and Katy Perry for example. They revived granny pants by bejewelling and pairing them with sexy hosiery and heels, turning them into a must-have fashion essential.

But head buyer of lingerie at John Lewis Helen Spencer has another theory for the return of conical bras, saying: "Throughout the last century, the trend for feminine pointy-shaped bras experienced a renaissance following times of a toughened economy, marking a return of unabashed femininity as women seek to have more fun with fashion as a form of escapism."

Whether that really is the case in fashion at the moment is neither here nor there for me. I’m interested in the trend and how it will best suit my favourite designer clothes, but part of me wonders if the look is just too overtly sexual for anywhere outside the bedroom.

What do you think?

Eva Longoria transforms into high-end fashion diva

Being the conventional sex kitten that she is, it is unusual to see actress Eva Longoria in any fashion ensemble other than a figure-hugging designer dress or a pair of sultry skinny jeans and an equally skimpy yet glamorous top - but all that is about to change.

The Desperate Housewives star has appeared on the cover of the very edgy French fashion magazine Citizen K looking like a science fiction-inspired dominatrix femme-bot. The idea behind the photoshoot seems to have been sharp quirkiness, something most of us would never have associated Eva with in the past.

Gone are her usual girly pink dresses, glitzy metallic strappy sandals, glowing bronzed skin and long, romantic curls and in their place were a sharp black bowl cut hairdo, a pale complexion, black lipstick and heavily lined and shadowed smoky eyes.

Shot by noted photographer Ruven Afanador, the 34-year-old dons a pair of bang-on-trend oversized pants in the pictures, sheer black stockings and a sexy black bra, along with this season’s must-have boyfriend blazer.

At just 5ft 2 in, Eva cut a very fine high-fashion model, proving that trends really are versatile and that anyone can experiment with them.

Do you find Eva Longoria’s transformation shocking?

Drew Barrymore does trashy chic to perfection

As both a fashion fiend and movie buff, I never thought Drew Barrymore could get any cooler, but boy was I wrong? The He’s Just Not That Into You star appeared on the cover of this month’s issue of Vs magazine looking like the edgy rock chick we’ve all come to love over the last couple of decades.

Promoting her directorial debut Whip It, which is based on a Texas roller skate derby, she sported the perfect trashy chic look - both on the cover and in the fashion spread within.

As if Drew in fabulous designer clothing and Courtney Love-inspired hair and makeup isn’t enough to have most dedicated followers of fashion salivating at the sheer sight, uber-cool actresses Juliette Lewis, Ellen Paige and Zoe Bell (with whom Drew stars and directs) were thrown into the mix to add just a touch more grunge.

In one image, Drew is pictured wearing a cutesy pink top with fabulously feathered capped shoulders, which is perfectly juxtaposed with dark and edgy velvet high-waisted shorts and sexy fishnet tights. In another, she dons a pair of super-sultry shiny pink hotpants and a black leather corset top, with yet another pair of fishnets.

Meanwhile, Juliette upholds her rock goddess reputation in a sheer black tights bodysuit with polka dots, a black bra worn visibly underneath and quirky black feathered tutu that would look right at home in a Tim Burton movie.

Each fashionista’s ensemble is paired with some retro roller skates for a real cutesy-gone-bad kind of look, which adds yet another layer of darkness to the fabulous designer clothes on show.

While roller skates may not be a fashionable or practical choice for us ladies, the common denominator in all the shots is some sexy fishnet tights, which should be enough to give any outfit that extra bit of va-va-voom this autumn.

Do you rate Drew as a fashion vixen or victim?

Braless stylistas - the worst fashion faux pas

Having recently had a reported mental breakdown and spent time in a psychiatric ward, one might say that Mischa Barton needs all the support she can get. But that sentiment was quite literally true yesterday when the actress was spotted strolling in Manhattan without a bra under her very sheer T-shirt.

Now I think the girl looks great. Apart from a few minor slip-ups in the style stakes recently, her choice of designer clothes is usually fabulous. But for me, that is simply irrelevant when a fashionista refuses to wear a bra - or any form of undergarment for that matter.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that Mischa’s nipples were there for all of New York to see, her lack of bra made the 23-year-old look like a frumpy old lady.

I found this major fashion faux pas equally as bad when Victoria Beckham did it recently on a day out in London. Who could forget that pretty girly cream dirndl miniskirt that she ruined with a sheer black top and zero bra?

Then of course there’s Lindsay Lohan. She is regularly spotted with little support in the breast department, but since we know she has a bit of a blind spot when it comes to knickers too, that should hardly be surprising!

A word of caution ladies. You might have the most heavenly breasts on earth that don’t require you to wear a bra - and that’s fine. But if you absolutely insist on going commando on top, please don’t do it with a sheer fabric!

Which fashion faux pas really gets your goat?
