‘Trollsen Twins’ in fur debacle
November 2nd, 2008
Following hot on the heels of Liz Hurley’s furry mess, the diminutive Olsen twins have come under attack for daring to use real fur in their collection.
The pint-sized pair were at a book signing in Manhattan to plug their literary masterpiece – Influence – when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen came up against some rather unwanted attention.
My friends at OK magazine told me that PETA had decided it was time to bring along the rather harshly named “Trollsen Twins” to cause some problems in paradise.
Peta designed the paper masks the Trollsen twins wore and they bore signs, one of which read "Trollsens Fur Hags From Hell".
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for people having the right to protest. We live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to air their views. Personally I choose not to wear fur, but using play ground bullying tactics to stop others from doing so, well I’m just not sure that’s right.
Ashley Byrne, Peta’s campaign coordinator, was quoted as saying that PETA has launched a serious Trollsen Twins Campaign that aims to raise awareness of animal treatment on fur farms.
Ms Byrne, said: "They’re being confined to tiny cages their whole lives and being killed by methods including suffocation and electrocution."
Is the treatment of the Olsen twins a step too far, or do Peta need to shout to be heard?

Most women look bad in fur except the young and gorgeous, who need no further assistance. Bear in mind the original owner of the pelt died whilst wearing it, and probably not a good death. If you have to withstand extreme cold then fur is the only answer. In the UK women look like over-weight bears, not a good look.
But there are further issues about fur trading and Inuit People, so like all these issues not as simple as it seems. Open debate minus the heat of rhetoric is the only way to tease the strands out.
If fur is raised in humane conditions what is the difference between this and free range farm animals. It is a product like anything else and we need to separate out fluffy emotions. If you wear leather shoes and carry leather bags, this is no different. Just a different end product.
We should know that fur farms are an ugly business, and knowing this we use our own discretion wether to wear garments with ‘cultivated’ fur in the design.. However, there are many of us of an age when we remember our mothers and grandmothers wore fur stoles and coats and hats way back in the pre-war era and often in the war too , and did not realise that this was the start towards extinction of beautiful animals killed for their coats in the name of ‘fashion’ This said, I ask what about those of us who just could not ‘burn’ these superb coats and stoles, and still have them in chests, packed well and sealed up with the moth ball and do not know what should be done with them.. Would it be a Crime to have clothes made from them with a certified age declaration that these were of a bygone era, cared for but needing to be remade or used as they are. If there is a solution to this dilemma then I have yet to hear of one, but to burn these would to me be crime too. Okay so this starts another dire condemnation against storing old furs then so be it. Just let it all out and there may be some dim light on this problem.. Thanks
Maybe the Trollsen Twins whoever they are… (do they have famous parents or something?), should be put into tiny cages and/or suffocated, then again who’d want to wear them… or real fur?
More power to Peta’s elbow I say!
The disgusting maltreatment of animals in a quest to make people look as beautiful as the creatures that have been stripped of their coats, is an impossible feat anyway!
I totally agree with the action taken. No one has any regard for the suffering these innocent animals go through and without some drastic ‘in your face’ action no one will take any heed.
Wearing fur nowadays is simply barbaric and people who do so should be publicly ashamed!
I think people have a right to decide if they wear fur or not. Also people have the right to protest but not to the point of bullying. I’m sure the Olsen twins are aware of how the animals are treated in order to obtain their fur. I saw some fur protesters the other day and asked if fur can not be obtained from the animals once they have died naturally. They said the people that make fur items only use the best quality fur. The Peta should find a way of getting the fur from animals that is not cruel because people are not going to stop wearing it.
