No gold stars for Michelle Obama’s inauguration outfit

Anyone who was, well anyone, was watching Barack Obama’s inauguration yesterday.

Our office here at Secret Sales was silent as we all crammed around the TV to get the first glimpse of Michelle Obama’s dress.

Now it would be glib to underestimate the relevance of the swearing in of the first ever black president of the United States, but I can’t deny we weren’t all just a little bit hysterical to see what Ms Obama would be wearing.

The yellow gold dress and coat by Isabel Toledo has drawn mixed reactions from the girls here in the office, and indeed from the fashion press at large.

Grazia dismissed what it described as the "the heavy fabric, the dull colour and the frumpy silhouette", giving the first lady of fashion the ultimate insult by describing her outfit as being made of "upholstery fabric".

Now I think that is a little harsh, but I’m afraid I have to agree that the outfit did not make the most of Michelle and she is a woman who has so far not put too many fashion feet wrong.

When you consider she is constantly being compared to that ultimate fashion icon, Jackie O, the pressure is really on and I defy anyone to compete with that.

That said, I was pleased to see she teamed her outfit with shoes from one of London’s finest designers. Her Jimmy Choo Glacier pumps were to my mind her saving grace and one up for British fashion.

Class always stands out!!! Those who didn’t like it have none and those that did have.

It was about the ceremony not something trivial as to what the First Lady was wearing!!!

I was disappointed with Michelle Obama’s outfit. I was hoping to see a ‘knock ‘em out’, outfit!!

Hope she turns it around by not dressing so frumpish again. After-all she is a young woman.
