Lagerfeld described fur debate as ‘childish’

back

The fur debate rages on as one designer with huge influence within the
industry has dismissed discussion on the matter as "childish".

Karl Lagerfeld was talking in an interview on Radio 4’s Today programme
when he defended the fur industry by suggesting that hunters make a
living from it.

He said that by slaughtering animals for their fur, people are simply
"killing those beasts who would kill us if they could".

Lagerfeld went on to imply that in a world where people eat meat and
wear leather, the fur debate is merely academic.

A spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) was quick to attack Lagerfeld, describing him as a "fashion dinosaur who is as out of step as his furs are out of style".

Peta said that most fur comes from Chinese fur farms where there are no laws to protect animals that are beaten and skinned
alive.

Now, I can’t confirm whether what Peta says is indeed true but I do
think that it is wholly inappropriate, not to mention irresponsible, for someone who is as renowned within the industry as Lagerfeld is, to
suggest there is nothing wrong with killing animals for the sake of a
coat or hat.

I think if you are going to enter into the discussion you should at
least make sure your comments are intelligent and based on facts.

Do you think Lagerfeld’s a fashion dinosaur?

if you are going to be against killing animals for fur you should also not eat it or its eggs, neither should u use its leather because it is still killing. those who say no to fur but yes to meat are simply hypocrits. I believe that killing an animal for fur is acceptable not great but i think as long as the animals do not belong to an endangered species there is litle harm done. further fur products are so expensive and won from animals born in captivation that the fur trend is not wide spread nor causing animals to die out. Acctually in zimbabwe the crocodile leather industry has caused an overpopulation in crocodiles, as every 10th crocodile young born in captivation is release back into nature which is more then would survive in the wild, so repopulation through the fashion industry. People should thoroughly inform them selfs on the issue befor just posting a comment condeming fur coats etc. Think of this alot of the fur is bought from third world countries where much of the population live off of the money they make by hunting. So decide their lifes and their families vs an animals. and if you answered the animals you have never seen first hand the suffering in Zimbabwe the congo or other impoverished nations.

Ditto to below ^_^
I think it is wrong to kill animals just for their fur ie. minks and such animals.
However aren’t their animals like sheep which keep producing wool so that can be used? I don’t actually know.
Seeing as beef is a common meat to eat i think it would make sense to use their skin to make leather because the cow is used for food and fashion - not solely for fashion.

I can see the last comments were made in January, but I can’t resist putting my own comments on!!! Lol

I think the fur debate is more about HOW the animals are killed than whether or not they’re worn.

We all know that animals are killed for food - but we hope that the food we get in the shops has been farmed and killed humanely. Not all producers follow the ideals of free-range etc. but consumers are demanding it more and more. Personally, while I eat meat, I abhor the idea that something has died just for me to eat - and has probably died in fear and pain. But that’s an aside. We would also hope that the leather we wear was treated humanely in life and at the time of death.

The problem with fur for clothing is that on the whole, the lives taken for the sake of fashion (which to be honest isn’t exactly a life or death circumstance - as food is) are NOT treated well and are slaughtered without care to the pain and suffering of the creature. The people who buy and wear fur, generally couldn’t give a rats backside or don’t want to know this.

Mr Lagerfeld is a rich, ignorant man who doesn’t obviously care where his materials come from - and to say those animals wold kill us first - well, I imagine they would - they are trying to survive. Don’t think many lions hunt for ‘The human coat’, do you?

Unfortunately there are people on this planet who do not have the intelligence to recognise the impact their choices and lifestyle have on the planet and the flora and fauna upon it.

But Mr Lagerfeld could probably make money without using animal skins - there’s plenty fake fur around - I think wearing animal cemetary on your peson is revolting anyways!

Anna, we don’t necessarily kill animals for their leather. Most animals that we get leather from are food and the leather is a by-product. I make sure all the leather products I buy are cowhide and nothing else.
After all his years in the fashion trade Mr Lagerfeld is showing his age… His antiquated ideas do him no favours and it’s time he realised that today’s consumer society is much more concious of the wellfare of the animals that provide our food and clothing. He’s in danger of going the way of many of the animals he likes to use for coats and become extinct!

how come the whole world is ignorant and naive when it come to animals? these defenceles creatures that soon wont be around for our childrens children to see because we want a bloody fur jacket?? how is this right?

nicole carr - January 9th, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I think it does Lagerfield no credit to be so naive about his own industry- or to be so unaware that that many meat eaters and leather wearers do positively avoid battery farmed products. If you have any doubt about how appallingly animals can be treated for fur production look at the Stella McCartney/PETA video on you tube- a fur farm in America, not China.
And even for those killer animals that lead a good life until shot by a hunter- is he really suggesting its OK to shoot one of the few remaining tigers for the sake of a fur coat?
Boo to Lagerfeld- he has less humanity than a dinosaur.

I absolutely agree! its the same thing! for both leather and fur the animal is killed so for an activist to respond in an angry manner is inappropriate. i bet this person(s) have leather shoes and possibly even leather ion their car. for one to retaliate against fur is ridiculous and for the record, fur will always be in fashion. maybe not as much as before but all major fashion haouses continue tomanufactuire with fur trimmings and linings. i myself own atleast 2 and im not embarrassed to admit it!

saying that karl is wrong in his argument that the animals would kill us if they could. these animals dont know right from wrong and instead kill us for food not for clothing and accessories! i believe in what he is saying but no for thre same reasons!!! Saz

I used to respect Lagerfeld for the sake of his style but this was something awfully wrong to say in public (how could a chinchilla kill me and eat me if it could? huh) - even though he’s bit right in one thing - we do wear leather shoes and coats, I personally think a short leather jacket is a must have in every wardrobe! Doesn’t it make us a hipocrits - so what, it’s wrong to kill animals for their fur but it’s right to kill them for leather?
