Gok Wan’s picture perfect

back

I finished watching Gok Wan’s Miss Naked Beauty last night and felt elated. I think the man is genuinely out to teach us ladies that size really doesn’t matter when it comes to being beautiful.

Yesterday saw the contestants having a picture taken of their most hated body parts. I think these women are amazingly brave.

My admiration for those who dared to bare is immeasurable. How hard would it be to expose your worst bits on TV for thousands of people to analyse?

Wan has been accused by Kevin O’Sullivan of the Mirror of making the women in the show feel "humiliated, demeaned and exploited".

The fashion guru’s aim though is to make women feel liberated and to give them back the power to show off what Mother Nature has given them.

For those who didn’t see the show last night, the girls’ other task was to sell a size 14 mannequin to a high street store.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, despite the fact that the average size of a British woman is actually a 14, most mannequins only go up to a size ten.

The group was successful in getting a size 14 mannequin in a shop window - albeit temporarily - and this morning I found myself on the way to work with a new sense of sisterhood.

If we all stop buying into body fascism maybe we can relax, breath out and be thankful for what we were born with.

Do you think Gok Wan’s programme is having a positive effect on women’s body image?

I think that Gok ROCKS! I always feel that he is truly on our side and just wants us to feel good about ourselves - he makes getting dressed up fun and sexy like it should be.

alicia hurst - January 23rd, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Yes he is truly amazing and seeing him work with women who have lost limbs is very inspiring. All we need is time to look good. Perhaps our men could wash up or run the hoover around now and again!!!

monica james - January 19th, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Yup…love Gok…Very inspirational…Good tips

Lisa - October 27th, 2009 at 9:20 am

Love Gok but I am a skinny short girl and can not put weight on! What about us?
How do we get to look good?
You may say we are lucky n all that but really im a 24 year old women and end up looking like a little girl what ever I seem to wear?
Can he do something for us?

Dawn Yuen - September 7th, 2009 at 3:47 pm

YES! he is pretty amazing- hes been through being overweight and knows how it feels. he uses hindsight to aspire women and men of all ages to strive for confidence. .. to be happy with normal sizes and that you dont have to be extremely thin to look good.

overall i think people should aim to be a healthy weight and focus on keeping a lean and toned body rather than having to starve yourself thin.

fran - September 2nd, 2009 at 8:38 pm

I am please that Gok is trying to empower us women to love what we have, i pick fault with my body continuously and have to make a considered effort to be thankful for what i have. Its all about unrealistic aspriations. I will never be nor do i want to be a size 0 a size 12 would be nice tho! lol

Mary O'Brien - May 28th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I agree with all but one of the comments posted so far (I think it’s obvious which one!).

I think what Gok Wan does is excellent.

He is honest without being unkind & does nothing but show women, young, old, thin, fat & all kinds of unusual shapes, that despite the fashion/media world’s often obtuse view of what is “attractive”, we are all absolutely gorgeous in & out of our clothes. And, as per Fifi’s post, this proves time & time again that true beauty comes from within, from our personilities & our confidence in ourselves.

I do think it is sad that we need a man on TV to show us this, but it is just another demonstration of just how much the media have come to influence our lives.

I think it is a shame that so many young women today (I am only 21, I am counted in this demogaphic I believe) are focused on the looks of starts such as Angelina Jolie, Kate Moss & other skinny celebrities (not that most of these women aren’t beautiful in their own right), when if you look back just a few years & the screens & papers were dominated by “plus” size sirens such as Marylin Monroe.

I recently learned that most modelling agencies consider you to be a “plus” sized model should you be a size 8 or above, please correct me if this is wrong, but if this is true I am proud to consider myself a PLUS sized model, sharing my size 8-10 measurements with some of the most beautiful women of our time, such as Dita Von Teese.

We should all be proud. Regardless.

(I also find it terribly amusing that the only negative comment about Gok posted here, was posted by a man.)

i do quite like Gokky, i think what he does to women making them feel better about themselves is something that every girl needs in life, its like i would love to have a gay best friend, he would be perfect to have when you’re going out to let you know exactly how you look. my one downer on Mr. Wan is the way he gropes the women, i’m not being funny but if i was on tv getting me bits out as it was the last thing i would want is some bloke grabbing my boobs or bum. it’s just not me. however, to be made to feel that good about yourself which the women participating clearly do as a result, a bit of fondling is a small price to pay.

Gok’s alright, he does us women proud in my opinion.

Hmmmm….personally I think Gok did a great job in whatever he’s doing. But my controversial mind would ask…what about the encouragement for people to be within healthy weight. If fashion is for every size, then you can say to its okay to live unhealthy and still look good. But! But….Another kudos to Gok for doing a great job in picking the women for his show. They are all women in different shape, but they are all quite fit and obviously healthy :)

GOK FOR PRIME MINISTER. The man is a genius and yes he does not try to humiliate anyone, only to make the girls stop hating themselves and feel good about themselves, why are we girls so hard on ourselves and try to be a size zero which quite frankly is horrible, its about time the world had him as our leader as i think he is fab. GOK FOR PM. Jo x

Fifi - November 1st, 2008 at 7:57 am

Ref Gok,

Beauty is only skin deep.

True beauty comes from within.

I unfortunately have seen very little of Gok’s TV shows - they must be on at a time when I’m not watching or a channel I’m not switched on to. Despite this I hear about them all the time from all sorts of disparate people - not all women. My beauty consultant leant me his book. As with all truly well thought through things Gok’s message is simple and cuts through a lot of the trivia and crap generated by the ‘fashion industry’.

Models/mannekins are a size 10 or less because couture clothes hang better on the more skeletal form. Women are as you say more commonly size 14 and above. Neither of these are in any way wrong or to be criticised unless they pose a real risk to health - (both ends of the size spectrum). Most of the danger lies in trying to be something you’re not. I was very healthy as a teenager and young woman and hated the look - the ping cheeks and healthy glow - desperate to look like a pale skinny goth, - never going to happen not even with starvation diets (I once went a fortnight on tea. coffee and oranges) causing several fainting episodes and less than a stone off.

Baring all is really for the beach and your own private bedroom and most intimate relationship(s) and I detect in the word brave your own discomfort with the concept of getting your kit off on national telly. This is entirely reasonable.

Gok is doing a splendid job in raising levels of awareness but I think for most of us the perfect solution would be to have our own private Gok/Trinny/Susanna to review our wardrobes and come shopping with us and arent most of the big stores now employing personal shoppers fro your help and convenience? Perhaps this will all become a casualy of the credit crunch as we start to struggle with the more basic stuff like paying our bills and feeding ourselves.

By the way - what has happened to Colour me Beautiful in this country? I’ve tried to find a consultant be a consultant and buy things - all without succees. Thank you for an interesting blog and if you don’t feel comfortable baring all then don’t - honestly - its not about bravery - its about modesty and who can criticise that!

i think gok wan is amazing!! he makes women feel amazing about themselves again!

Jen - October 31st, 2008 at 3:27 pm

I completely agree with your article. Gok Wan is doing such wonderful things to help women worldwide realise their true beauty and that we dont have to conform to the “ideal” size 8-10, women are beautiful curvy bumpy and lumpy. Its the way that we are meant to be, and thanks to Gok i know that when i look in the mirror, I may not be the fashion industrys idea of beautiful, but I am who i am and that I love the way i look.
Self esteem in many women needs to be raised and i truely think that Gok Wan is an inspiration and is well on the way to doing this! I just hope many other women hear him and believe that who they are is amazing, gorgeous and worth while, rather than looking on the front cover of a magazine and wishing they were that person. I always believe it is better to be who you are and happy than wishing you were someone else and feeling miserable.

Laura - October 31st, 2008 at 1:55 pm

I Love Gok, I think he is ace! How could anyone say he humiliates people, he is so lovely to those women and makes them feel really good about themselves. I think he is definately having a positive effect on women’s body image.

laura age 32 - October 31st, 2008 at 12:30 pm

every woman on the planet has a different body, whether it be the size of her boobs or the shape of her bum, thank the lord, the world would be a very dull place to live if everyone looked the same!
Therefore yes they should have different sized mannaquins to reflect this.
High street stores should be making themselves stand out from all the size 0 designer boutiques.
Come on the great british high street, be brave and lead the way!

Natalie M - October 31st, 2008 at 11:58 am

My friend and I were so shocked to see a mannequin is M&S wearing a Patricia Field dress in a size 8, that was pinned at the back by at least 3 inches of fabric. The mannequin must have been a size 0!!

Gem Nicholls - October 31st, 2008 at 9:08 am

It doesnt really matter what size the mannequin is, the clothes aren’t made any bigger (though they SHOULD be). Too often have I found a great bargain on this site but not in any reasonable size. Totally not your fault though, the industry at large is the culprit. Cheers for the blog.
