How to customise items in your wardrobe

How to customise items in your wardrobe

We’ve all seen our friend Gok Wan transform a simple top from the high street into a piece of evening wear or designer clothing using a little imagination.

Customising high street clothing or updating a designer piece into something fresh and current is becoming increasingly popular among fashionistas.

Wendy Gardiner, editor at Sewing World magazine, explained that restyling is a really easy way to create a new look using designer clothing or high street items that you already have hanging in your wardrobe.

It can be done by "adding some trims, adding tucks, pleats, beading and spray paint - there are all sorts of things you can do to it to make it special," she continued.

One thing to remember though, she added, was to make sure you enjoy it and have fun doing it. There are no rules and if people want some help then there are plenty of books and websites offering advice.

Here at Secret Sales we often exchange ideas for customising simple vest tops. Adding interesting buttons is always easy to do, but frills and bows are also an important trend this season.

What techniques have been successful for you? Please share your tips with the Secret Sales office.

How to love your feet in killer heels

How to love your feet in killer heels

Designer shoes are a double-edged sword this season. On the one hand footwear is all about making a statement and there are some stunning examples from many designers in the shops. On the other hand, we all know the toll killer heels will take on our feet this party season!

Victoria Beckham’s love of designer shoes and skyscraper stilettos has publically caused her to suffer from unsightly bunions, so what can we do to avoid having so suffer for our love of gorgeous footwear?

Nail expert Belinda Price suggests giving your feet a little TLC after a big night out. She recommends soaking them in a foot spa before treating them to a rich foot souffle and then wrapping them in a warm towel for "ultra pampering".

She recommends using a foot cream to tackle dry, cracked heels before buffing away any hard skin with a pumice or file. And cuticles should be cut back before applying any nail polish.

"Dry cracked nails can be saved at the salon - try a gel pedicure to see long lasting colour that will allow the dryness to grow out," she adds.

Vogue states that wedge boots are still all the rage this season and that socks worn under sandals will be a key trend looking ahead to spring/summer 2010.

Morrissey and McCartney duet - over designer shoes

Morrissey and McCartney duet - over designer shoes

After all of the talk last week of Leona Lewis’ vegan designer clothing dreams in a possible collaboration with Stella McCartney, it seems someone else has jumped in there first!

But perhaps an even more unlikely duo has been announced - between the vegetarian clothing designer and, would you believe it, Morrissey.

Daughter of Sir Paul and the late animal activist Linda McCartney, Stella said: "I’m working with Morrissey on a line of leather-free shoes which I’m really excited about. We are still in the early stages, but the shoes could be launched next year."

Although his foray into the designer shoe world was a little unexpected among some of us here at Secret Sales HQ, Morrissey has never been one to hide his beliefs when it comes to animal rights.

Not only has the singer released an album entitled Meat Is Murder, but the vegetarian entertainer has also walked off stage in the past complaining of smells from nearby burger vans - at California Music Festival Coachella earlier this year.

Stella has a line history of collaborations with other labels, from her ranges with Adidas and H&M to her most recent collection for GapKids.

Do you think this next range can be as successful?

Designer clothing - can we start too young?

Designer clothing - can we start too young?

We all remember the time when we first treated ourselves to a piece of designer clothing. The time we first splashed out on that amazing pair of designer shoes or unwrapped that beautiful handbag.

Having infamous parents like Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, little Suri will never get to experience that satisfying moment - as she has been kitted out in countless designer outfits since she set foot in the world.

But this has not been without its critisism. Suri’s wardrobe has been reported to be worth some £2 million and she is rarely seen wearing the same thing twice.

This weekend (November 29th), Katie Holmes told Access Hollywood why she lets her little tot teeter around in high heels.

"She, like every little girl - she loves my high heels," she said.

Adding that they were safe for young feet as they were designed for young girls who take part in ballroom dancing.

"I found them for her and she loves them," she said.

Can designer fashion come too young. We all want to look great from a young age, but should designer clothing wait until we are old enough to appreciate it? Please let me know what you think.
