Carla Bruni performs in GapKids designer jacket

Carla Bruni performs in GapKids designer jacket

When Stella McCartney launched her designer clothing range for GapKids recently, I was green with envy that I wouldn’t be able to fit into any of it. Plus I don’t have any kids to dress up in the cute little clothes.

The collection is adorable. I love the boys’ military-style jacket and the girls’ pink tutu skirt in particular.

However, it seems some other women in the fashion world are of the same opinion and have been spotted squeezing into the kids’ range!

Carla Bruni, fashion icon and wife of French president Nicolas Sarkozy, performed her new single on French television this week (November 23rd) sporting a black designer jacket from the children’s line.

Lauren Milligan at Vogue thinks that the choice of clothing was perhaps in tribute to Paul McCartney (Stella’s father) as she and Harry Connick Junior performed a duet of the Beatles’ song And I Love Her, which was written by Sir Paul.

She is not alone though it seems as writing in a blog for Vogue, model Laura Bailey not only kitted out her two young children in t-shirts, fleeces and dresses from the line, but also herself - in a girls’ pink mac (age 12-13).

Have you ever been tempted to shop in the kids’ collections?

Nominees announced for the ‘fashion Oscars’

Nominees announced for the 'fashion Oscars'

Here at Secret Sales HQ we look forward to the announcement of the nominees for the British Fashion Awards each year. Categories range from best designer clothing brand to the emerging talent award for accessories and key players in the fashion industry put together the shortlists.

This year is set to be a big one, as it coincides with the 25th anniversary of the British Fashion Council.

Nominated for the Designer Brand award are Pringle of Scotland, Burberry, Mulberry and the winner will be the British clothing label that has made an international impact and has excelled in its sector.

Georgia Jagger, Daisy Lowe and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have been shortlisted for the model category and British Collection of the Year nominees are Jonathan Saunders, Erdem and Christopher Kane.

"This year’s nominee list highlights the extraordinary breadth of British design talent," commented the joint chief executive of the British Fashion Council Caroline Rush.

Bets are on for the model of the year category - which has been won in the past by Agyness Deyn, Lily Cole, Kate Moss and Erin O’Connor - but opinion is torn here at Secret Sales.

Who do you think will win British model of the year?

Corset tops and leggings anyone?

Corset tops and leggings anyone?

Those of you who are already fans of the sequinned hot pant trend may be happy to hear that underwear continues to be the new outerwear.

You only need to open a magazine or switch on the television to see the likes of Scarlett Johannsen, Rihanna, Chloe Sevigny and Lady Gaga in a corseted or underwear-like creation.

Lucy Ballinger at the Daily Mail said that the popularity of designer corsets and underwear as outerwear among celebrities like these ladies has helped in making this a trend on the high street.

"If you are daring enough, you could pair a corset with leggings and go out clubbing or to a party. But they can also be worn in the boudoir," suggested Alex Popa, founder of Bordelle, in the publication. But for those of you who aren’t so daring, here at Secret Sales we think that straight leg jeans might be a little more flattering.

Recently, a sale of corsets by the firm at Selfridges sold out within just one day and according to the department store, fashion girdle sales have risen by 70 per cent in the capital.

Head buyer for lingerie at the retailer Helen Attwood told the newspaper that people were investing in designer underwear and "more quality pieces" during the recession, rather than items that get thrown away.

Last weekend (November 22nd) Rihanna performed at the American Music Awards wearing a revealing bandage-effect outfit.

Will you be daring enough to brave the trend? Let me know.

Lohan to remain employed at Ungaro

Lohan to remain employed at Ungaro

You can imagine having sold a designer clothing brand that carries your name that you would still harbour worries about its reputation.

This was more than likely how Emanuel Ungaro felt when his former brand took on Lindsay Lohan as artistic director, to which he - not so quietly - voiced his outraged opinions on.

However, according to Vogue, the controversial actress’ future with the label is not under threat and she is currently still attending photo shoots for their collaboration.

Chief executive officer for the brand Mounir Moufarrige told WWD that the 23-year-old was a suitable candidate to be their "walking, talking advertisement".

He added: "There are some girls out there that whenever they move, whatever they wear, they attract attention, even if they make mistakes. It’s all publicity."

So her success, he explained, had come down to the increased attention the brand had received along with visibility in the media - even though her line never made it into the shops. Mr Moufarrige said that before her involvement got people talking, Ungaro had been a "dormant brand".

He also refused to comment on what Mr Ungaro himself had thought of the decision when asked by Reuters.

Do you think Lohan creates a good image for the brand?

It’s all about statement accessories

It's all about statement accessories

Here at Secret Sales HQ we believe in purchasing statement pieces of designer clothing that can last you between seasons and make you feel that little bit special. So here are some tips for updating that designer dress hanging in your wardrobe and breathing some fresh air into your look for the party season.

Dramatic shoes, a sparkling clutch bag and some costume jewellery can transform an old designer dress into contemporary evening wear fit for the festive period.

Gemma Hayward at the Independent says: "Be bold and embrace embellishment."

She recommends opting for dramatic shoes, either skyscraper-high heels or completely flat ballet pumps, but she adds that whichever you decide to wear, make sure that they aren’t plain.

Shoes on the catwalks - and on the high street - have taken on all sorts of fabrics, from luxurious metallics to neon velvets and art deco styling.

Clutch bags are also a party season staple. Ms Haywood recommends anything with stud detailing, chains and rivets to ensure you’re bang on trend.

"While evening bags on long straps or chains leave both hands free to hold two cocktails at once," she adds.

The likes of Kate Beckinsale and Alexa Chung have appeared in InStyle magazine recently, adding glamour to their ensemble with a vintage brooch.

Remember though, less can sometimes be more.
