FURious
October 18th, 2008
There are some fads in fashion which not only look wrong, they just are wrong. No, I’m not talking about shell suits or puff ball skirts. I mean fur.
If you ask me, it’s the ultimate in bad taste to wear another creature’s skin over your own and there’s just no need for it.
So, I was quite shocked and more than a little disappointed to learn from the people at the Sun that Liz Hurley has been pictured modelling a mink wrap for Blackglama Furs.
It’s not as if Liz needs the money and she sure as hell doesn’t need the exposure.
I would have thought the woman who launched her career by wearing a dress made of safety pins should understand the power of fashion and the influence it has over people.
Liz Hurley should expect some come-back for the advertising, if previous reaction to fur-touting stars is anything to go by.
J-Lo had a tin of paint thrown over her for wearing fur a while back and no doubt regretted her decision.
Why doesn’t Hurley take a leaf out of Leona Lewis’ book and put her celebrity to a good cause?
Ms Lewis modelled for Peta in an anti-fur campaign earlier this year and was voted World’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity by the animal rights group.
So Liz, I say ditch the fur, because its not big, it’s definitely not clever and it’s in no way GLAMArous.

Natalie Brown, you claim that you “love animals” but eat meat, wear leather and would consider wearing fur if it wasn’t too expensive? I sure feel sorry for anyone else you claim to “love”! Saying you love animals but then eating their flesh and wearing their skin is like saying you love jewish people and then placing a vote for Hitler and the Nazi’s to come to power when they were around. You say you “wouldn’t dream of hurting an animal” but when you support industries such as the meat industry, fur and leather industries, you are not only indirectly hurting them but also indirectly murdering them, you’re supporting the people who do that to the animals and even giving them the money carry on doing it to more animals.
If you love animals, Natalie, go veg!
hi all, im not a veggie and i love leather shoes but when an animal is farmed for fur, no other part is used. Farm animals in the uk have a certain standard of life and if you choose rspca freedom foods, or free range then they have an even better life. However animals farmed for fur are usually kept inhumanely and a lot of fur is sourced in places like China where they have no animal welfare in place. The most sickening thing I have ever seen is where a raccon was skinned ALIVE. They bash they’re head on the pavement then hang them upside down, skin them and throw them on a pile, the poor thingwas able to lift its head before it started to fit. I swear to God, that will stay with me as long as I live. Watch if you get cheap makeup brushes as wll that are real fur, as they are cheap for a reason.
I think it’s up to the individuals to choose whether to wear fur or not. I love animals and couldn’t possibly dream of hurting one, but i’m not vegetarian, I wear leather and yes I have considered wearing fur (bit too expensive for me though).
i have to say every point that has been made has been valid, it’s not big and clever and i do understand why people don’t like it. BUT bloody cavemen wore furs and i know we have evolved alot since then and technology has moved on but for millions of years fur has been a form of clothing…what about leather boots and shoes, are we not to wear them either now? i only buy leather shoes and things, they’re comfier and last longer than any other material.
fur has always been known as a sign of wealth so i think if people earn the cash it is their own right to wear and buy what they like. i know if i was jlo and i had paint thrown over me i would sue, and drown the person in that same paint.
each to their own.
I agree entirely with Annbel Saunders article. As an animal lover and
vegetarian I hate the idea of a beautiful animal being killed just so that a conceited human without any conscience can flaunt themselves. These so called “stars” should defintely lead by example and refuse to advertise or wear furs. As Annabel quite rightly points out, they hardly need the money.
Fur coats are for beautiful animals and ugly people. Miss Hurley is an attention seeker,in this instance she has attracted the wrong sort of attention.
You sell leather handbags, large and small, also leather garments. Have you ever seen what a fox can do in one night, kill every chicken yet only eat one.
In Scotland farmers lose their annual profit in one go. As for mink , they are bred in the lap of luxury for the sole use of their fur to keep people warm. It is a pity that chickens are not given the same luxury before they end up in fast food outlets and every supermarket.
Before you buy that desirable handbag or latest shoe, think what you are abusing.
We were given rodents to keep us warm for a reason.
There is a difference between utilizing fur and leather from animals we eat and breeding animals for their fur alone.
Do you wear Leather Shoes or Jackets?
Why only eat the flesh and use the skin for leather, why not utilise all parts?
Fashion is so wasteful and taxing on planet earth, one fur coat will last several lifetimes and then rot into the earth should it eventually be discarded.
Plastic & Synthetic fibres last how long before looking tired and rubbish - a few months? Then to take hundreds of years to degrade in the earth or shall we burn it and then destroy more of our atmosphere.
A little thought and education needed by people.
So quick to jump on the band-wagon.
I have to say that I think some animal rights activists take things too far, it’s almost as bad a religious extremists, nobody has any right to throw paint or insult someone because of their decisions, we can’t expect everyone to agree with what we believe and have to accept that.
I think celebrities have a lot of support and advice from very experienced people, no doubt Liz Hurley would have considered this decision very carefully and she felt (and has every right to just as much as animal rights activists do) that wearing fur was acceptable in her eyes.
I think in today’s society we forget how different people are and we are never going to agree on everything. I refuse to have people force their opinions on me just because they they they are right and I won’t force mine on anyone else.
Celebrities are human beings and are entitled to do and believe what they want. The question is where do people draw the line with animal rights, at what point will people start harassing celebrities because they eat meat??? Are people going to harass lions because they eat other animals?
I respect everyone’s opinion and I’m sure Liz Hurley does too, when it comes down to it we are all going to form our own opinions and unfortunately Liz doesn’t agree with anti fur demonstrators and they have to accept that. Nobody agrees with unnecessary cruelty and I know that today in the fashion industry there are quite a few designers that only use fur from animals that are killed for their meat.
Really it comes down to being green more than anything, and if we can use all the products from animals that we kill for meat then that’s a bonus. I think its very VERY wasteful just to kill something for one product and agree that killing animals just for their fur is not green, not resourceful and certainly not fair.

I wonder if she would wear it if she knew most animals are skinned alive as the pelt comes off easier. These people make me sick, perhaps a day at a mink farm would change her mind.
