Timberland – The Brand

Timberland’s heritage story begins with Nathan Swartz, a family business man who owned a shoe company in Massachusetts, USA. The Abington Shoe Company privately manufactured shoes for a number of brands during the 50’s - 60’s; with 1965 being a crucial year for Swartz. It was this year that he introduced injection-moulding technology to the footwear industry.
The pioneering method saw the ability to fuse soles to leather uppers without stitching. This created a true water repellent shoe.
In 1973 the Timberland brand was launched, with their waterproof boots boasting success and winning countless awards for their notoriously creative advertising campaigns. A number of other casual shoes followed, with international acclaim growing as Timberland began to export abroad.
By the late 80’s a light hiking boot debuted to praise from the sporting world. The boot incorporated trademarked Timberland Trail Grip™, a rubber sole which doesn’t harm trails in spite of being designed for maximum traction. The same year saw Timberland’s first apparel collection, with a year later a women’s line and Mukluk boots introduced too.
Not content with making ground breaking shoes, the Timberland Company was proud to demonstrate the power they have in initiating social changes. The company offered employees paid leave to do community service around local areas, and launched the ‘Give racism the boot’ campaign in 1992. The campaign was a show of supporting diversity. It ran across major media outlets throughout the USA and Europe, with New York City billboards being dedicated to the cause.
In recent years Timberland continues with their path to raise social and global awareness of ethical issues that affect us all. Constantly voted as one of the world’s friendliest and most Green businesses, the Timberland way of life is a positive one.
