Synonymous for designing the must have bikini, Melissa Odabash – herself a former catwalk and swimwear model – launched her eponymous label in 19
95; believing she was able to design swimwear which was superior to the uncomfortable and over designed styles she had previously modelled.
Inspired by Italian fashion, Melissa Odabash’s styles are the pinnacle of simple and timeless elegance. Assembled from gorgeous, high quality fabrics; it is arguably Melissa Odabash’s design process, which plays a significant role in the overall appeal of her collections. A distinctive manufacturing process is used, whereupon fine twisted elastic is sewn into the swimsuits lining rather than the classic utilisation of under wire and padding which can often prove cumbersome and uncomfortable to the wearer.
This inimitable appeal proved its worth, as within two years the zebra print bikini, for which Melissa Odabash is renowned, became a global sensation as well as the best selling item in the Victoria’s Secret Catalogue. Another success quickly followed as a swimsuit, which appeared on the cover of US Glamour took America by storm. This secured the reputation of Melissa Odabash among fashion circles and as a result the brand is deemed by trendsetters as the only swimwear to be seen in on the beach. Melissa Odabash’s unique collections have also frequently featured within the pages of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues.
In 2004, Melissa Odabash was selected by the iconic swimwear brand Speedo to design a collection in celebration of its 75th anniversary. Using touches distinctive to her collections, Melissa Odabash comprised a collection of swimsuits and two-pieces adorned with Swarovski crystals, studded leather, hand embroidered sequins and semi precious stones including coral, amethyst and turquoise. Photographed by the famous singer/songwriter Bryan Adams, a glossy book was produced featuring celebrities wearing garments from this exclusive collection, these included amongst many; Jerry Hall, Naomi Campbell and flamenco dancer Joaquin Cortez.
Over the years Melissa Odabash has expanded her clothing line beyond swimwear and now includes kaftans, bags, accessories as well as a ready to wear line. She currently works out of her atelier located in London, a mere short journey from her flagship store, which opened in the city’s trendy Notting Hill area in 2007. A fabulous one stop, pre-holiday destination for those fortunate enough to be heading off to sunnier climes, the store comprises of a luxurious yet relaxed shopping environment for those who wish to pack a little bit of glamour in their suitcase.
