Versace – The brand
Hailed as one of the most influential men in fashion of the 20th century, Gianni Versace was born in Reggio di Calabria, Italy. Growing up with two siblings, brother Santos and sister Donatella, the family was tight knit, with Gianni helping his dressmaker mother with her work from a young age. She taught him embroidery, and by age 9 Gianni had produced his first dress.
Aged 25 he moved to Milan to work in fashion, working for a number of designers before he launched the first Versace collection in the mid Seventies. The brazen Versace style saw Gianni producing costumes for ballet, opera and theatre productions before attracting the glamorous celebrity clientele it does today.

But sadly Gianni Versace made headlines for all the wrong reasons in 1997 when he was found murdered in his Miami home. The surprise death of one of fashion’s brightest stars sent shockwaves around the world. Santos and Donatella took over the family business, with Donatella’s daughter Allegra, a young child at the time inheriting a 50% share of the company.
Taking over as the head of design, Donatella has pushed controversy within the brand through her daring designs and her own personal life which is constantly in headlines. From her own battles with addiction to her daughter Allegra’s eating disorder the media keeps an eagle eye on the Versace family.
Ignoring her personal struggles no one can deny the revival of Versace brought about by Donatella.
