Tommy Hilfiger

Loved for his preppy ‘all-American’ styles, Tommy Hilfiger is certainly one of the fashion world’s greats. His clean cut looks provide a staple for many a stylish wardrobe, and whether you opt for a crisp shirt or a great pair of classic Hilfiger jeans, you can be sure this brand will give you that certain je ne sais quoi.

Tommy Hilfiger the Brand

Ever the entrepreneur, Hilfiger started his empire whilst he was a high-school. He saw a niche creating clothing inspired by the high fashions of New York and London, and selling them to his school friends in his small home town of Elmira. His business took off and Hilfiger was soon running several small stores called People’s Place, whilst juggling his school work.

Fuelled by his success in Elmira, Hilfiger moved to New York in 1979 to pursue a career in fashion design. Intrigued to find a fashion designer who was not simply an artist but an entrepreneur, businessman Mohan Murjani approached Hilfiger with his concept for a menswear line. 1985 saw the debut of Hilfiger’s debut menswear collection. Backed by Murjani, Hilfiger created a collection based on the modernisation of classic wardrobe staples. Button down shirts, chinos, blazers and cotton sweaters were all given a contemporary spin. This style of modern takes on classic pieces remains Tommy Hilfiger’s signature approach to fashion.

Even in his early years Hilfiger was striving ahead for great things. In the same year as he launched his debut collection, Hilfiger launched an ad campaign stating himself, Perry Ellis, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, were the “4 Great American Designers For Men”. A rather cocky approach, certainly, but none the less, one that set him on the road to iconic status.  Indeed, the Hilfiger look has become a rather idiosyncratic symbol of modern America. This has enabled Hilfiger to gain a loyal following of ‘all-American’ supporters, including the likes of Diane Kruger, Emmy Rossum and Britney Spears. In 1999 Tommy Hilfiger was the official sponsor for the Rolling Stones No Security Tour, once again associating his brand with some of the World’s greatest iconic figures.  So much so that Hilfiger recently collaborated on a book entitled Iconic America.

Today the Tommy Hilfiger label is a firmly established lifestyle brand, covering every aspect of living for men, women and children. The brand even has its own media channel- Tommy TV, once again proving Hilfiger’s innovative nature which has been so important in furthering his brand.
