Marc Jacobs – The brand

It seems appropriate that one of most infamous designers of today was born during a decade where fashion flourished. A child of the Sixties, Jacobs was born in 1963 in the undisputed fashion capital of the world; New York City. Attending the prestigious Parsons School of Design, as a teenager he also worked in one of Manhattan’s trendy boutiques Charivari. It was here he met Perry Ellis, going on to design for him in the Eighties.
Jacobs designed a notorious grunge collection for Perry Ellis, inspired by the Seattle rock scene. The collection resulted in Jacob’s job being terminated, but where things seemed to be going badly; really they were on the up. Jacobs became the youngest person to win the CDFA award for New Fashion Talent, the first of many awards to come.
In 1993 he started his eponymous label, described for ‘a woman who brings home the bacon, but also fries it up in the pan.’ Supermodels Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista modelled for the show for free. Marc Jacobs’s long list of celebrity pals saw his brand develop many admirers, often sitting in the front rows of his over the top, theatrical runway shows. Jacobs has become something of a celebrity himself, with his A List set of fans/friends including Kanye West, Sofia Coppola, Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth.
By 1997 Jacobs had joined French fashion house Louis Vuitton as their Artistic Director, credited for revamping the brand from a luggage company to include stylish ready to wear fashion. Today, Marc Jacobs continues to design for both his self titled label and Louis Vuitton, making him one of busiest men in fashion.

Marc Jacobs is the type of artist who’ll dabble in every shade of a palette, mix it all together and create a masterpiece to be adored by the masses. His style evolves seasonally, drawing influence from that specific time in his life. In 2006 Jacobs showed a heavily grunge inspired collection, resulting in the popular layering trend the same year. The next year he switched to a polished, lady like look. His ability to authentically tackle different styles with his signature flair is what makes Marc Jacobs unique.
