Manuka – The Brand

Mother of three, fashion lover and yoga enthusiast – Leonie Ellyatt is the founder of Yoga wear favourite Manuka. New Zealand born Ellyatt started off working in PR, teaching aerobics at nights. She later moved on to Chicago, studying for qualifications in personal training. In 1993 she launched her own personal training business in Hong Kong, staying there for three years before moving again to London.
Setting up a base in Kensington, Ellyatt launched her personal training business there. Working in one of the trendiest districts in London she increasingly became aware of clients who loved working out but hated the fashion choices available. From garish bright colours, to leotards that left everything on show – the options for yoga wear in specific were sparse.
In 1997 after having her first baby, Ellyatt sold her gym business and decided to launch Manuka. Inspired by her grandmother, who Ellyatt credits as a strong, progressive woman, she was keen to fill a niche she saw in the yoga wear market with something truly individual. High quality clothing that was wearable whilst affordable has been her long time mission. Ellyatt began designing herself, with Manuka starting out as a mail order company run from her home.
After landing the company’s first wholesale account in 2001 Manuka was growing with success, and moved into its own London office. It gained status as luxury yoga wear after being exclusively stocked in Harrods and Selfridges, but Manuka has always made an emphasis to provide clothing that is available for all, however they choose to wear it.
Manuka – Classic Styles
Manuka is dedicated to making beautiful clothes, which retain a sense of durability and comfort – all whilst being eco friendly.
Before Manuka’s gorgeous garment range is even available for purchase it is tested by a range of specialists. Yoga teachers and well being experts test all of Manuka’s lines, ensuring labels and seams are positioned correctly, fabrics don’t pinch or ride up during exercise, and that comfort is key.
Manuka’s eco friendly stance towards fashion enables a careful selection when it comes to fabric choice. Sustainable, non toxic materials and yarns are used for all products in attempts to reduce the demands made on our natural resources.
Natural cotton is mostly used in the yoga wear range for its breathable qualities, a must have during exercising. Other materials used by Manuka include viscose, elastane and lycra – the latter two materials both incredibly durable, allowing a snug fit on the body which flatters and is feminine.

Manuka’s collection includes a variety of yoga tops. From racer back tops, t shirts, and hoodies, to crossover empire lines, boat necks and round necks top – there is a style to flatter all top half body shapes. Yoga bottoms range from full length bottoms to cropped lengths, with leggings for trendy types and high waistbands for those requiring extra support. Manuka’s life wear is great for any type of work out. Sweat tops and bottoms in a neutral palette will suit all, with Manuka’s velour sweat suits adding a luxe touch.
Inhale Manuka is the first ever scented yoga wear collection. The pioneering line combines tea tree oil into garments, using a patented scent which refreshes every time it is washed rather than losing its smell. Tea tree oil is naturally anti-fungal, benefitting wearers by helping keep their skin fresh and clean. With clothes that are actually good for you, and the environment you hardly need a reason to buy Manuka.
