The Jimmy Choo brand as we know it today only came into existence in 1996. However, self titled couture shoemaker Mr Jimmy Choo had been crafting his superior shoes in East London since the Eighties. Jimmy Choo’s popularity today is hugely due in part to founder and President of the brand Tamara Mellon. As a previous Accessories Editor for British Vogue, Mellon saw the potential of Jimmy Choo’s shoes and approached him to partner as part of the Jimmy Choo Company. Together they established the ready-to-wear shoe company, and opened the first stand alone Jimmy Choo boutique in London. New York and Los Angeles boutiques soon followed. With the move across the transatlantic , Hollywood’s finest were quick to adopt Jimmy Choo as their choice red carpet shoe, sealing Jimmy Choo’s identity as an ‘It’ brand.
By April 2001, Mr Choo sold his share of the company. Mellon was keen to develop Jimmy Choo as a lifestyle brand and not just a shoemaker. The same period saw the arrival of Jimmy Choo’s handbag range, luxurious bags to rival some of the most well known designer bag brands. Subsequent smaller accessories such as wallets, sunglasses and scarves followed, with talks of a Jimmy Choo fragrance in the pipeline. Whatever Mellon does next, just as everything else she touches, we’re sure it will turn to gold.
