Established in 1998, Baby Phat first came into being as a publicity tool. Producing tiny tee shirts with the clever logo ‘Baby Phat’ to excite his men’s Phat Farm runway shows, Russel Simmons struck gold when celebrities such as Britney Spears and Tyra Banks were photographed wearing these tee shirts. The phenomenal popularity of the Baby Phat tees resulted in the decision to launch an entire collection.
Kimora Lee Simmons, the wife of hip-hop mogul and creator of the fashion label Phat Farm, Russell Simmons; was the obvious choice to create, direct and establish the brands new ‘corporate sibling,’ Baby Phat.
Using her knowledge acquired as a top fashion model, Kimora knew that Baby Phat’s success would rely upon her ability to unite the worlds of high fashion and hip-hop. By incorporating her experiences within working in the fashion industry, her marriage to Russell Simmons and her instinctive sense of style, Kimora succeeded in propelling Baby Phat to the forefront of urban luxury lifestyle brands.

Working together on the Phat label, Kimora and Russell have branched out from urban fashions to create lifestyle brands. Today the Phat label also comprises of a childrenswear range as well as collaborating with Motorola to create the Baby Phat mobile phone. The labels merge with the Kellwood Company in 2004 was expected the make the brands succeed further and explore further ventures.
