Aquascutum the Brand
With a 155 year heritage firmly set within the tradition of fine British tailoring, Aquascutum is one of the few design labels to still produce their garments in British factories. The entire core Aquascutum product is still made in their Northamptonshire factory, highlighting the brands ongoing support of the much neglected British textile industry. Thus, guaranteeing the finest quality in both fabric and cut and a truly British authenticity.
Aquascutum was founded in 1851, by British tailor John Emary, when he opened his high-end menswear shop on London’s Regent Street. By 1853 after years of experiment, Emary produced the first waterproof wool, an ideal fabric for his signature raincoats and trenches. His discovery was patented under the name Aquascutum, Latin for ‘watershield’; this then became the name of his much successful brand.
After years of producing coats for soldiers and officers in both World War I and II, Emary gained his first ‘fashion’ client in the shape of King Edward VII. The King commissioned a trench coat in Prince of Wales Check and this was to spark the British Royal Family’
s loyal relationship with Aquascutum.
Today, Aquascutum is a much sought after luxury fashion brand. With its insistence on British made product, the finest British tailoring and incredible attention to detail, the brand is seen worldwide as a byword for true authentic British luxury.
Thanks to the likes of head designers, Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler, Aquascutum is now recognised as a fashion forward brand, whilst still retaining their original air of quintessential Britishness.
Classic Aquascutum Styles
Renowned for their perfect trench, Aquascutum has never veered too far from its original roots. True to its archetypal British ethos, Aquascutum’s designs are based around excellent tailoring and luxury fabrics such as fine British tweed, double cashmere, nappa leather and duchess satin.
Aquascutum specialise in menswear, womenswear and accessories, with recent launches of Aquascutum Vintage for both men and women. In recent years the brand has collaborated with Saville Row tailor Nick Hart, to create a capsule collection of formal menswear.
Expect chic cashmere trenches and satiny draped cocktail dresses from Aquascutums womenswear collections. Favourite styles include: The Serpentine frill dress, Jubilee Road trench coat, Bloomsbury Square dress, Green Park floaty dress, Endell Street dress, Carey Street dress, Onassis Raincoat, Tatler dress and Lolly coat.
Aquascutum for men remains synonymous with classic British quality, yet under Herz and Fidler have acquired a contemporary twist. Understated and demure, the emphasis is on the finest tailoring and traditional textile styles such as the Prince of Wales Check, Mini-Dogtooth and authentic British tweed. As with Aquascutum’s womenswear, the trench coat and the overcoat prevail. Nick Hart’s sharply tailored bespoke line for Aquascutum gives the brand another edge. Inspired by the brands original silhouette from the 1960s; Hart’s signature one-button suits sum up images of Michael Caine in his heyday. Popular menswear styles include: Beige trench coats, chequered shirts, crew neck jumpers, fine wool funnel neck sweaters and tweed, Pique polo shirts, velvet collared hunting jackets.
With such sumptuous fabrics and attention to perfect tailoring, it really is no wonder why Aquascutum is so fit for the Royal Family.
