Daisy does it

I felt a little bit sorry for Daisy Lowe when she spilt with Marc Ronson and there was a part of me that felt she might have been taken for a bit of a ride by the producer who is almost twice her age.

But then I heard that Ms Lowe is to be the new face of Marc Jacobs and I pulled myself together. The girl’s not to be pitied on any level.

Lowe will be the latest in a string of celebrity faces to front for fashion’s maverick designer.

I do think Lowe has more right, if there is such a thing, to be working it than his previous ‘models’ such as Victoria Beckham and Sofia Coppola.

At least Lowe is signed to Select and modelling does appear to be her full-time job when she’s not busy being papped at parties and clubs.

Juergen Teller is going to be shooting the spring/summer ‘09 campaign and it looks as though it will be the model’s biggest campaign to date.

Daisy looked awesome in a recent campaign for Agent Provocateur and I must say I am pleased that someone with the influence of Marc Jacobs has seen fit to take on a woman who’s healthy but sexy curves should be an inspiration to all those twiglet thin women out there.

Is Daisy a good role model?

Weighty issues

The papers are yet again full of tales of how amazing Lily Allen looks because she shifted a few pounds.

All this Lily loving got me thinking about a worrying trend I have noticed - the media is completely obsessed with weight and its relation to a person’s wellbeing.

The moment a star puts on too much weight they are out of control, binge eating, junk food freaks and when they lose weight they getting their life back on track; Britney I hope you’re listening.

Lose too much weight though and you risk having Jordon-style headlines about marriage problems, rumours of eating disorders and mental health issues.

I think maybe it is time to start checking ourselves and stop checking each other out. I agree its every woman’s right to look gorgeous and we want to make the effort, but why are we so judgemental on one another?

If we are constantly fed this belief that weight and appearance are the only things worth noting about a person then we’re going use that as the only yardstick to judge each other.

It’s about time we started praising women for their talent - yes that’s you Lily - for the fact that you have been nominated for a Grammy Award, rather than that you were voted worst dressed by the NME.

Do you judge others by their appearance or talents?

Cinching it in, painting it on, glamming it up

This season I’m all about accessories as I’m making a very real and concerted effort to take care of my wallet and my wardrobe at the same time.

Waists are still in this season but forget about big belts, they are so Summer ‘07. This season’s belts are much thinner but they’re still there to make a statement.

Gold buckles seem to be the order of the day and they’ve been seen on everyone from Kate Hudson to Mischa Barton.

The great thing is they work with loads of this season’s trends. They can cinch in a mini or a maxi designer dresses but my personal favourite is the waist defining jumpsuit/belt combo.

It draws attention to the waist without losing the jumpsuit’s body lengthening effect - perfect.

Another accessory I love this season is colour popping nail varnish.

I’ve probably got enough big, statement rings to last me all season but what better way to show them off and draw attention than with a flash of electric blue nail varnish.

If all of that fails, I might just invest in a beaded cover up. It’s a great way to solve the ‘What coat should I wear?’ dilemma and adds instant glam to any outfit.

Vintage oozes grown-up sophistication and I want some of that old school glamour.

Does vintage rock or not?

Pamela Anderson could front for Westwood

Fashion has been known for some unexpected pairings in the past, Victoria Beckham’s campaign for Marc Jacobs being a fairly recent example that springs to mind.

But this was a bizarre fashion step too far for me. According to a source quoted by the Daily Mail, Pamela Anderson has signed a six figure deal to become the new face of the iconic first lady of fashion, Vivienne Westwood.

Now Pammie does have certain charms and I can see that she might be quite intoxicating in the flesh, but there are two obvious things that stand out about her and they don’t scream fashion.

Plastic fantastic star Pammie is I suppose quite unconventional if her love life’s anything to go by and Dame Vivienne is definitely attracted to ‘unusual’ people.

If reports are to be believed she fell for the Baywatch beauty’s "quirkiness" when she met her at a party last year and was so taken by her that she signed her up to be the face and body of her summer 2009 campaign right there and then.

The Mail On Sunday reported a source as saying that "Vivienne and a team of stylists and photographers jetted to Los Angeles last week to shoot Pammie".

Dame Westwood has said she "can’t speak about it yet" but did offer "anything I would say would be completely positive".

Do you think this is a strange fashion pairing or a match made in designer heaven?

Bloomin’ lovely

There was a time when pregnant women had to make do with wearing tent like dresses and hide themselves away in a dark corner for nine months.

But ever since Top Shop took up the maternity mantle, every good, self respecting high street store seems to have followed suit.

While maternity ranges are severely limited compared to the rest of the store, there is now only a limited excuse for losing fashion kudos when with child.

So it is with some small delight for all those women heavy with child that I announce the arrival of Donna Karen’s new capsule maternity range.

I have always thought that Ms Karan is one designer who understands how to make women look good and feel comfortable at the same time, so I think she is the ideal person to be creating a maternity collection.

Due out next Spring, the 18 piece range entitled The Happy Birth Day Collection will feature trousers and skirts in black, white and grey, my contemporaries at WWD tell me.

While I think its great women get the chance to wear designer clothes even when they are heavily pregnant there is still a part of me that wonders if nothing is sacred anymore.

It would be nice to know that there is at least one time in your life when you can just let go and let it all hang out.

Is Donna Karen’s collection a celebration of pregnancy of too much pressure to look good all the time?
